Infrastructure to Support Deployment of DataStage® Solutions
DataStage is a powerful technology that, if correctly deployed, can revolutionize the manner in which data movement processes are developed and deployed across an enterprise. Its key benefits include:
- A dramatic increase in efficiency in the development of data movement processes - from complex to simple, achieved in part through the use of vendor-supplied functionality and through the development of reusable components and a standardized architecture;
- A dramatic decrease in maintenance and administration burden, achieved in part by using metadata to drive parameterized jobs.
In order for an enterprise to achieve such benefits, it is critical to establish both an infrastructure and process that supports the following: Multi-user development and maintenance; Multi-project development and maintenance; Reusable components; Version control; Metadata management.
Equally important is Daman's Rapid Application Development methodology supporting a multi-step effort of (1) Analysis, (2) Design, (3) Build, (4) Test, (5) Deploy, and (6) Documentation and Knowledge Transfer that optimizes the use of the DataStage tool suite along with other relevant technologies to develop a complete data movement solution.
Take the First Step towards Leveraging your Investment
Daman initiates an engagement with a quick review of the client's environment to define the best approach, infrastructure and process for solution delivery. The following are evaluated:
- Objectives and Requirements
We document the Business and Information Technology objectives and requirements, including the client's business, computing environment, and relevant constraints.
- Source/Target Platforms
Source and target host processing capacity, operating systems, disk storage capacity, available network connectivity and capacity, and available batch processing windows.
- Development, Testing, Maintenance and Production Standards
Client standards and requirements for development, testing, maintenance, and promotion of solution to production.
- Source/Target Systems and Data
Includes: (1) a business assessment of database models, relationships, and data elements, (2) identification of key processes and data, (3) determination of data summarization and granularity requirements, (4) current and expected data volumes, and (5) definition and review of critical business rules.
Designing and Establishing the Infrastructure
Based on the review defined above, key design and infrastructure recommendations are made regarding:
- Required DataStage PACKs (DataStage Packaged Application Connectivity Kits) and flavors (including need for Parallel Extender)
- Need for functionality enhancements and related needs for custom stages, custom PACKs
- Reusable components using DataStage jobs/ routines, Universe Basic code or the use of shared containers
- The need for help utilities such as for testing, logging, status reporting etc.
- Definition of templates, naming conventions and parameters
- Configuration of DataStage Project(s) with Daman pre-built functionality to support rapid development of the data movement solution
- Scheduling process if data movement solution is a data interface; otherwise, migration approach and process if data movement solution is a data migration
- Project team resources, roles and expertise requirements
This infrastructure then forms the basis for the successful and cost-effective roll out of all future interfaces and conversions.
